La crescente richiesta di miniaturizzazione dei dispositivi magnetici ha innescato un crescente interesse nei confronti dello studio delle proprietà magnetiche di elementi confinati lateralmente su scala nanometrica; esempi importanti di queste tecnologie sono le testine di lettura per hard disk e le memorie RAM magnetiche non volatili, entrambi dispositivi che si basano su sistemi a valvola di spin.
